Coventry fought out a goalless draw with old rivals Birmingham

Cyril Ray Lewis

Coventry 70s match 3

Coventry fought out a goalless draw with old rivals Birmingham. It was probably the right result with both Keepers called upon to make good saves with in the end both sides settling for a point.
The first half saw Coventry feeding striker Dave Marriott and he forced two great saves out of the Birmingham keeper whilst Coventry's keeper Jeff Grimes was rarely troubled in the first half.
The second half saw Jeff Grimes come to Coventry's rescue with a couple of great saves himself and towards the end of the game Dave Marriott was through on goal, but a Birmingham player made a sliding tackle from behind to push the ball out for a corner - an obvious penalty and a blue card for the player, but the referee who up to this point had a good game, chose to just give a corner - a totally wrong decision in our opinion.
Any one of the seven players could have walked away with the Man of the Match award - Tony Malone and Phil Hutchings for keeping it tight at the back, Colin Yates, Peter Skelsey and Phil Maund for all their tireless work in midfield and Dave Marriott for occupying two Birmingham defenders all game, but the award went to Jeff Grimes for his two vital saves in the second half.
A massive shout out must go to Brian Sharp, Ray Lewis and Kevin Perrott who were unused subs, but with the game being so tight it was impossible to change anything. Also thanks to Bryce Taylor and Bruce Doe for the touchline support.
