Against the odds Coventry fought out a creditable draw with Hartshill

Ray Lewis5 Dec 2024 - 09:45

A gutsy performance from the team, typified by Pete Skelsey battling on, when clearly injured

Against the odds Coventry fought out a creditable draw with Hartshill - a side who boast two English International players and one Irish International - to keep their one and a half season undefeated run intact. After only two minutes Peter Skelsey pulled up injured and with no subs Pete opted to stay on and limped around the pitch for the rest of the match. The team regrouped and to a man put in a superb team performance. Tony Malone and Phil Hutchings handled the dangerous Hartshill forwards really well, restricting them to the occasional shot at goal where they found keeper Jeff Grimes in top form as the sides went in level at the break.
Hartshill took the lead from a free kick half way through the second half, but Coventry weren't behind for long when Pete Skelsey played in Colin Yates who sent Phil Maund through, taking one touch before shooting it passed the keeper for a deserved equaliser. Colin Yates and Dave Floy worked tirelessly in midfield helped by the injured Pete. Dave Floy nearly won it for Coventry when the Hartshill keeper had to push his effort round for a corner. Coventry then needed keeper Jeff Grimes to pull off a superb save late in the game to earn them a point and keep their undefeated record intact. Normally Jeff Grimes would have got the man of the match, but the team unanimously voted for Pete Skelsey for playing nearly 50 minutes with his injury that at times saw him unable to move. A great team performance against very good opposition.
