Russ Watkin, Chairman, commented “Members Memorial Day was again well attended, we thank you all for your help in making today such a special day in honour of friends passed, a day of football, fun and laughter as they would have wished”.
A real club effort, not just on the football side of things with a great turnout of players from our regular day session players , ladies group and younger men’s group, but also Alwyn Day for organising the structure of the tournament and keeping the standings up to date, Colin Farmer and Ken Badland for refereeing the games and a big thankyou to all those who donated prizes for the raffle and also to Kim Watkin for running the raffle and baking cakes for us all to enjoy with our after match drinks at the café.
The tournament started with Russ bringing us together and addressing the group before we all took several moments to remember our members and friends who have passed.
The tournament then started with 6 teams playing each other in a round robin tournament of 10-minute games, to compete for the Lee Whitehead Memorial Trophy and Members Memorial Trophy. To make it interesting each team were given a name that corresponded to a well-known DIY tool – Hammers, Chisels, Spanners, Drills, Saws and Screwdrivers.
All the games were close and goals were hard to come by. Games were won by fine margins, but 3 teams started to pull away from the other 3 and were closing in on each other right to the end. Congratulations go to Team Chisels (whites) who won the tournament 2 points ahead of runners up Team Screwdrivers (yellows), who in turn beat Team Hammers (reds) into 3rd place by 1 point. Well done also to Warwick Webster, from Team Chisels, who won the golden boot with 4 goals scored.
