We have been in discussions over the two or three weeks with the management of WFA England over 70s to host a practice match in the newly refurbished indoor facility at The Alan Higgs Centre against National Cup Winners Blackburn Rovers WF. After a couple of knock backs about playing the game on a Weekend due to the indoor facility being rented out to Frisbee throwers every weekend up until the good weather starts in April, we have finally secured a midweek date of Wednesday 17th January from 1pm - 3pm when the match will take place. We have been assured that if all goes well, this game will be a pre-curser to more games at regional level and even the possibility of International matches with different age groups. We are convinced that hosting events like this will no doubt raise the profile of our club and put us on the walking football map both as a walking football club and as welcoming hosts.
The manager of Blackburn 65s who is also involved with the England setup has promised to bring his Blackburn 65s team down to the Alan Higgs in the new year to play our own 65s team in a friendly. If you remember, this is the same Blackburn side we played in the National Finals at Redditch in September where we suffered our only defeat 1-0, the only goal we conceded in the tournament. They are a very good team but this match will give us a chance to show them how competitive we are and hopefully we can avenge that defeat. I have also told him we can put out a 50+ team and he will be coming back to me if there is a possibility of playing a team in that age group at the same time.
Our 67s team have a league fixture at Rushall on the same date and it is important that they are given all the support that they have enjoyed so far this season, however, some of our Committee members will be on hand at the Alan Higgs to meet and greet our visitors and welcome them to the venue and offer the use of our equipment to set up the pitch.
Hopefully you will see that this is good news for the club as a whole and yet another step along the road to becoming recognised as a leading light in the walking football community.
If you’re not going to Rushall to support our strong 67s side and want to come along to watch this match, or offer a little bit of assistance if it’s needed, you will be most welcome, but please bear in mind the footwear regulation that is in place in the indoor facility.
