Coventry & District A and Alcester Town exemplified sportsmanship by sharing the Winner’s Trophy at the Racing Club Warwick Summer Tournament held on Saturday 8th June.
After 7 rounds of penalties both teams decided to end the match as a draw. The teams were evenly matched throughout. After drawing 0-0 at full time the game went into a best of 3 penalties, but there was still no decider! Then we were into sudden death with every player, including the goalkeepers taking one penalty each, but still no decider! Then after another round of penalties, both teams shook hands and decided to end the game as a draw. Garry Bench with a deserved man of the match performance made some outstanding saves during the game. Well done Garry!
Every player contributed goals either during the group stage, the semi-final or by taking penalties in the final in what as an exceptional team performance. Well done Coventry & District A!
It was a great end to a great day organised by Racing Club Warwick Walking Football Club. Coventry & District would like to thank Gordon, Nigel and Terry for organising the day and to Duncan and his wife for putting on the food.
Racing Club Warwick Football Club Facebook page:We played some great teams, all played in good spirt and we made some new friends along the way.
Ten teams representing 5 clubs in the Warwickshire area took part in the “Summer Tournament”. They were Racing Club Warwick (4 teams), Coventry & District (2 Teams), Sky Blues in the Community (2 Teams), Ambleside and Alcester. Each team was made up of 6 players and up to 2 substitutes.
The teams were split into two groups of 5, each playing a round robin of 4 games of 20 minutes each and one bye. Alcester won group A with Coventry & District A runners up. Coventry & District B won group B, after winning all games, with Racing Club Warwick runners up. Dave Marriott top scored with 5 goals, as his prowess in front of goal was matched only by exceptional performances from the rest of the team.
This meant both Coventry & District sides would meet in the semi-final. A mouth-watering prospect of epic proportions! It also meant that whatever the outcome Coventry & District would be represented in the final.
Both teams felt confident. Chances were created at both ends and both goalies made good saves to keep the scoreline 0-0. Eventually the deadlock was broken. A fierce shot from Billy was saved by Bruce only for the ball to fall to Boffy to tap in to give Coventry A the lead. Try as they might Coventry B could not find an equaliser and so Coventry A advanced to the final. Final score 1-0 to Coventry & District A. Some will say youth won the day and that may be true, but they won fair and square!
Whilst Coventry & District A shared 1st place with Alcester, Coventry & District B secured 3rd place by beating the other semi-final losers in their group stage game.
Coventry & District Walking Football Club were well represented on the day. Apart from both sets of players, Alwyn Day helped Ray Lewis manage the day and team managed the Coventry & District B team. Ken Badland, who could not play because of injury, pulled on the referees shirt and refereed 7 games!
The Coventry & District Teams were:
Coventry A - Billy Morrison (Captain), Gary Bench (Goalkeeper), Neil Jackson, Conrad Boffin, Neal Perryman, Tim Tyler, Bryce Taylor, Reichard Le Grande
Coventry B – Peter Skelsey (Captain), Bruce Doe (Goalkeeper), Tony Malone, Kevin Perrot, Ray Lewis, Dave Marriott, Malcom Harrison
This was a great performance from everyone involved. We did ourselves and Coventry Walking Football Club proud – a credit to our BADGE!
