Coventry were invited to take part in the Old Corinthians Heart Care Tournament played at Rushall Olympic ground on Friday 20th March.
Along with 7 other teams, Coventry made up 8 teams that who were split into 2 groups of 4 teams. The teams in each group played each other, with the winners of each group playing each other in the final. The teams in 2nd to 4th also then played against the team in their corresponding position in the other group.
Game 1 - Coventry 0 v 0 Rushall Raiders
A game Coventry totally dominated, but after reducing Rushall to just one shot on goal they failed to convert any of the numerous chances that came their way. However, they did force the keeper into several good saves and Colin Yates saw his goal-bound shot rebound of the inside of the post.
Game 2 - Coventry 0 v 1 Old Corinthians
Another game that Coventry were the better side in, but fell to a deflected shot that beat keeper Jeff Grimes. Coventry again had the better chances, but failed to take any of them and late in the game a long range shot from Corinthians deflected off a defender to give the eventual tournament winners a narrow victory.
Game 3 - Coventry 1 v 1 Tamworth
Coventry again created the better chances and when Kevin Perrott's pass found Phil Maund, he beat the keeper with a low shot into the corner. However late in the game a Tamworth player surrounded by four Coventry players somehow got his shot away and beat Jeff. Another game where Coventry failed to take their chances.
Game 4 - Coventry 2 v 0 Boldmere
Coventry finally clicked into gear and Colin McCann (Macca) gave them a deserved lead when he picked up Colin Yates's pass to leave the keeper helpless with a fierce drive into the net. Ray Lewis then made the game safe after a fine pass from Brian Sharp found Macca and he laid it off to Ray who made no mistake. Highlight of the game was the touchline shouting at Ray "he's gone past you Ray", "you've lost him Ray" as Ray had the difficult job of marking Boldmere's playmaker out of the game.
All in all a great tournament to be part of and raise much needed funds for the Heart Care charity, raising £1,333 on the day and still growing!. It was very well organised and run by the Old Corinthians Club. Many thanks to Paul Feeney and Tony Malone who chose Phil Maund as player of the Tournament and to the players for all their efforts. Our own Ken Badland also volunteered his service to referee in the tournament.
