Coventry Ladies at Inkberrow Tournament 14th June

Cyril Ray Lewis20 Jun - 19:48

Missed out on the semi-final, but were a credit to the club and themselves

Our ladies travelled to Inkberrow to take part in a tournament. We entered the age group 35-49 as we don’t have the numbers to enter full teams in 35-49 and 50+ age groups. Our group consisted of ten teams.
We kicked off against a strong Stratford team who had won a tournament the week before.
In a strongly contested match with no side really on top, Stratford took the lead but Coventry came back with good work in the midfield finding Claire Jones up front who controlled the ball before slipping her marker and firing into the net.
FT: Stratford 1 Coventry 1
Game 2 pitted us against British Allsorts who we met in the semi final last year in Benalmadena. As the name suggests, they are a team of players put together from a number of clubs.
Claire again went through their defence and despatched the ball into the net but the referee blew his whistle to disallow the goal for what he considered was running. A very harsh decision.
As the game continued we were holding our own and Claire hit the post from a quick counter attack. However, as the game progressed, Allsorts were becoming stronger and it was no surprise when they took the lead from a superb strike that flew into the net leaving our stand-in goalkeeper Sarah with no chance of getting near it. Just after half time Allsorts increased their lead and although we continued to push, it was not to be.
FT: British Allsorts 2 Coventry 0
Game 3 was against Alcester. Coventry were on the front foot from the off and were having the lions share of the play.
Coventry were dominent throughout the match and Claire Jones was again on target with 2 goals and guest player Danni Prichard bagged the other one.
FT: Alcester 0 Coventry 3
Game 4 saw us pitted against hosts Inkberrow. In a match that was tense and tight with chances few and far between, it was not surprising that the match ended with honours even.
FT: Inkberrow 0 Coventry 0
Our final game in the round was against Castle Donnington. We were playing well and finding our players with our passing, then against the run of play, Castle Donnington scored the opening goal. This seemed to spur the Coventry team on and within 3 minutes Danni struck a sweet shot into the corner of the net to bring us level. We were having to work hard to keep a spirited response from Castle Donnington at bay, but keep them at bay we did and Danni who was having a fine game struck again to give us a win.
FT: Castle Donnington 1 Coventry 2.
Having won 2 games, drawn 2 and lost only 1 we thought we would progress to the semi final having finished 4th in the group. However, much to our surprise we missed out, vue to the organiser from Inkberrow who informed us that one team, Stratford, who won the group would go straight to the final and the 2nd and 3rd teams would play a knock-out game with the winner going to the final.
Our ladies were a credit to the club and there were very good performances from captain Elaine Smith, stand-in keeper Sarah Long, defenders Angela and Debbie, forwards Nade and 3 goal Claire Jones plus our guest players Danni Prichard (3 goals) and Kato in midfield. All players today can be proud of their performance and enthusiasm that went into what I think was a successful tournament, slightly spoiled by a strange organisational decision regarding the final stages.
Big thanks to Bruce and Phyl for coming along to support.
