Coventry and District Ladies at Blaby and Whetstone Annual Summer Tournament

Cyril Ray Lewis21 Jun - 21:00

Saturday 20th June

A group from the ladies section travelled to Whetstone to take part in the Blaby and Whetstone Annual Summer Tournament. The squad consisted of some regular league players plus some ladies who don't normally get the chance to put the team kit on and play some competitive football. It was raining slightly when we arrived but the rain soon turned into blazing sunshine. The pitches were much bigger than we were used to and grass, which took us back a bit.
There were two leagues of five teams resulting in Coventry having four group games.
Match 1 - Blaby Whites Vs Coventry. A fairly matched equal first game which resulted in a 0-0 draw. Our defence had to be reorganised following a head injury for Sarah so it was a good point gained.
Match 2 - Coventry Vs Leicester Hockey. This was a fiercely fought game with both teams trying to get used to the size of the pitch. Coventry took a deserved lead through Nade, but Leicester Hockey responded late on with an equaliser. Phyl in goal for Coventry made some great saves. Result 1-1. Another point gained.
Match 3 - Coventry Vs Linclsea. Another tough game as Linclsea had won their first two games. As a newly qualified referee I try to ensure that we all show the required respect for the officials, however on this occasion a very questionable decision of a penalty against Coventry for a player encroaching the area was a step too far. Both teams said it just never happened, but the referee who was nowhere near the so called incident stuck to her guns and gave the penalty. I purposely stood by the referee as the Linclsea player put it wide of the goal. Let's just say that respect was shown. Coventry ladies showed the true spirit that had been displayed by the club of late and kept a clean sheet thanks to everyone on the pitch, but especially Phyl in between the sticks. Result 0-0 and another point gained.
Match 4 - Coventry Vs Kettering.
We have played against Kettering quite a bit in recent times so we know each other fairly well so unsurprisingly it was a close game with chances for each team, but neither side managing to get it over the line. A 0-0 result and another point.
Four games and four draws which had Coventry in 2nd place in the league (before the final group game of Leicester Hockey Vs Linclsea) and heading for Europa league final as was the name given to the final game consisting of both 2nd place finishers from the two leagues. The winners of both leagues headed into the champions league final. Leicester Hockey managed to get a point off Linclsea and so pipped Coventry to the place in the 2nd place finishers final.
It was a tremendous effort from everyone involved in the squad and valuable playing time for those who don't normally get the opportunity. Truly rewarding to see women playing football with smiles on their faces. Well done everyone
