Coventry & District Ladies showcase their talent to the League

Coventry & District Ladies showcase their talent to the League

Ray Lewis14 May - 13:57

All the players can be justifiably satisfied with their contribution and we applaud the 100% commitment that was given. Well done ladies!

On Sunday 11 May, Coventry ladies travelled to the Birmingham County FA headquarters to play their first ever tournament at the end of season women’s league festival. 16 teams were split into 4 sections where the winners of each league went on to play each other, the team finishing second went on to play the second place teams and so on.
Coventry had a particularly tough draw in their group as they were pitted against league winners Braunton of North Devon, league runners up Forest Vets and Arden Pinks. All have played in the league for two years and are experienced.
In a hard fought game, Coventry overcame Braunton 2-1 with Becky Davies scoring both goals in an excellent team performance.
The second game against Arden Pinks ended in a 0-0 draw with Coventry having most of the play but just could not find the net.
In the final group game of the first round, Forest Vets just edged Coventry out with a closely contested 1-0 win. The results meant that we finished second in the group and went into the next round to face other second place finishers. This meant facing a strong Birmingham team, Boldmere St Michael’s and Inkberrow.
Coventry eased past Boldmere 3-1 with Becky scoring one goal and Hannah netting a brace.
The second game in the group was against Inkberrow and it finished all square at 0-0.
The final game in the group was against a well established and solid Birmingham side. In an end to end game that could have gone either way, Birmingham scored the decisive goal midway through the game that ended up as the winner, making them the winners of the group with Coventry coming second.
Considering Coventry & District Ladies have only been in existence since October and were up against teams that have been established in the league for 2 years, this was a tremendous achievement and all the players should be proud of their team and individual performances.
Well done to all the players and the supporters who came to watch us .
Bruce was asked to pick the Coventry player of the tournament and he picked goalkeeper Amy Hopkins-Hayes for her all round solidarity in goal for every match. Bruce also stated that Angela Lloyd and captain Elaine Smith and 3 goal Becky Davies were also outstanding. All the players can be justifiably satisfied with their contribution and we applaud the 100% commitment that was given. Well done ladies!
