Club Update from our Club Secretary - Alwyn Day

Ray Lewis31 Jan - 09:29

"Our club is thriving"

We as a club now have 120+ members that have signed up and paid their membership fee for year 2024/25. Owing to our success at attracting new players to our sessions almost every week, that number is increasing all the time, indeed we are awaiting another 3 or so membership forms to be returned from players who have attended within the last 3 weeks.
On a Monday and Thursday it is now normal for an average attendance of between 30 to 40 players and on a Friday evening we are getting up to 20+. There is only one word to describe the club and that word is ‘thriving’. Long may it continue.
We will continue to charge £3 per session on a pay and play basis. We have no plans to increase the session fee or ask players to book sessions in advance!
We had 21 people who were members in 2023/24 that did not renew their membership owing to ill health, long standing injuries, travel and domestic problems and for a variety of other reasons. So having lost those members since last May, we have quickly made our numbers back up and as I said earlier we continue to grow.
We started a ladies section four months ago that play on Tuesday evenings where we normally get an attendance of 10 or 12 players and we hope to attract a few more over the coming weeks. They played their first friendly match a couple of weeks ago against a well established Harstshill Ladies league team and won the game 2-1 and were unlucky not to have won by a greater margin. Some of those players, namely Rachael, Becky, Luca and Elaine have attended the sessions on Monday or Thursday with the men and I think that many would agree that they have done really well and I have heard very complimentary remarks from some of you at their standard of play.
Our 50s league team are challenging for the title of their division and managers Brendan and Seamus are forging a team that continue to perform and I’m sure promotion this season is a strong possibility. Congratulations to the players and managers on doing a fine job.
Our 63s who for the previous 3 seasons have been right up there in the mix for the league title are finding this season difficult to achieve the results they hoped for, but players and management remain committed and continue to put 100% effort into the cause.
The 67s were last beaten in their division (at time of writing) when we had to field a weakened side through injury on only the second game of the inaugural season but have remained unbeaten ever since, finishing runners up that season losing out by a single point and runners up again last season. We continue to challenge for top spot this season. Congratulations to the players and managers past and present on this fine record and may we continue at the standard we have set ourselves.
While on the subject of the Birmingham League, next season will see a major change to the age groups. There will be no 50, 57s, 63s and 67s. These age groups will be replaced by 50s, 55s, 60s, 65s and 70s in line with what other leagues are doing nationally. We as a club will have to discuss and decide what age groups we wish to enter teams into to be competitive.
As Club Secretary, I have to keep a record of the membership and your personal details such as address, phone number etc. If any of your details have changed, can you please let me know and I can amend my records accordingly.
Thank you and like me I hope you are proud to be a part of this exceptional group of people we call club members.
Alwyn Day
Club Secretary.
