A great day for Coventry ladies and Blaby & Whetstone ladies who played each other for the first time

Two teams, playing each other twice

Coventry & District Ladies took on a strong and established Blaby & Whetstone team from Leicestershire today (26th July) at the Alan Higgs Centre. Coventry Ladies put out two teams and so did Blaby. It was decided that the “A” teams would play each other twice and the “B” teams likewise.
In a closely contested first game the “A” teams of Coventry and Blaby fought out an honours even O-0 draw while the “B” team of Coventry fell 0-2 to a strong Blaby second string.
In the second game it was again very competitive with the “A” teams faced each other with neither team on top as the game ebbed and flowed. Blaby were finding room down their right and the Coventry stand-in keeper, Nadine (Nade) who was deputising for the missing first choice Amy, had to be on her toes to make two excellent saves to keep the score level. Coventry though, were also beginning to find some joy, particularly down the middle with Luca holding the ball up well to bring our midfield into play with Elaine and the tough tackling midfield dynamo that is Debbie, becoming a threat to the Blaby goal. As the game progressed, Blaby again attacked down the right and some good passing saw them take the lead with a smart finish from close range. Coventry continued to plug away and were level soon after, when a Blaby defender under pressure from the hard working Lorette and Hannah, stepped into the goal area and referee Colin Farmer awarded a penalty. Skipper Elaine Smith stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to level the scores. The game continued end to end but the final score of 1-1 was a fair reflection of the play for this game.
The Coventry “B” team took on the Blaby second string again and put in another creditable performance against an experienced and strong Blaby second string who just had too much in their locker for the Coventry ladies on the day with Coventry going down to a 0-3 defeat. Our “B” team manager, Steph Day would like to thank goalkeeper, AJ, who normally plays for Hartshill Strollers Ladies for coming over today to play in goal for us. You were a star AJ, thank you. There were some creditable performances in the “Bs” with captain Clare busy all over the pitch, Sarah putting in a shift and Kirsten up front doing well.
To summarise, everyone who pulled on a Coventry shirt today can be proud of the way they played and the way in which they conducted themselves throughout the matches and in the social that took place afterwards. Well done to all.
