65s win through to the final of the Rushall Charity Tournament in aid of Compton Hospice, but lose out to MSA Burntwood in a tense final

As Phil commented: "It was great management by Elaine and the team played well, all for a good cause".

A squad of eleven players made the journey up the M6 to represent the club in a charity tournament raising funds for Compton Hospice. Conditions were difficult with it being very warm and breezy. There were 3 group games initially.
Match 1 Vs Old Corinthians - A super strict referee woke everyone up and it took a short while for Coventry to adapt and relax into the game. Old Corinthians scored first but Kev Perrott scored an equaliser from open play before Coventry were awarded a penalty for the opposition falling foul of the 4 team non walking offences. Phil Maund duly dispatched the penalty. Result 2-1 to Coventry. A winning start.
Match 2 Vs Birmingham - A more relaxed approach from the official enabled some good football to be played. Coventry controlled the game and looked after the football much better. Kev Perrott again scored from open play with a neat finish. Result 1-0 to Coventry. Two wins from 2 games.
Match 3 Vs Boldmere - A tight affair which could have gone either way but Coventry stuck together and fought hard. Brian Telfer scored the winner from open play and this proved to be the only goal of the game with Jeff Grimes pulling off some great saves. Result 1-0 to Coventry. 3 group games and 3 wins. Coventry were through to the final.
Final Vs Burntwood - Again a very tight and tense game with nothing between the teams. The very good but strict referee from game one was officiating the final and we struggled with the tight control at times. Burntwood scored to take the lead and then managed the game to restrict Coventry's possession. Eventually it went in our favour and the referee awarded Coventry a penalty for four non walking offences by the opposition. Phil Maund showed courage to step up and take it, but put it wide, unlucky Phil. In the closing stages of the game as much as Coventry tried the ball just wouldn't go in the net. Result 1-0 defeat for Coventry.
Everyone involved today represented the club in the right manner and should be proud of themselves. Respect was shown to the officials and the opposing teams. To get to the final was a tremendous effort. The Man of the Tournament was Mick O'Connor for a composed and controlled performance throughout. Well done Mick. It was a tough decision as Kev Perrott would also have been a worthy winner. Apologies to those who didn't get as much game time as it was hoped and finally a thank you from me your guest manager for the day, thanks for the experience.
